How to Apply

If you are an experienced finance professional looking for a hands-on leadership opportunity where you can build a finance function, work directly with the CEO and make a tangible contribution to the business, we would welcome your application.

Please submit your CV and a short cover letter explaining your relevant experience and what interests you about the opportunity. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Opportunity

A growing, founder-led business in the private residential and estate management sector is seeking an accomplished Financial Controller to take ownership of its finance function and play a pivotal role in the next stage of its development.

This is an opportunity for a hands-on finance professional who wants more than an established accounting function to maintain. You will build the financial infrastructure from the ground up, selecting and implementing systems, establishing robust controls and creating the reporting processes needed to support a growing, multi-state business.

Reporting directly to the CEO, you will have significant autonomy, visibility across the business and a direct influence on commercial decision-making. You will be responsible for the full spectrum of financial operations, from the general ledger and month-end close to client billing, cash management, financial planning and statutory compliance.

For the right individual, this is an opportunity to combine technical accounting expertise, commercial judgement and the satisfaction of building a well-controlled finance function from the outset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Control: Own the general ledger, chart of accounts and month-end close, producing accurate management accounts, balance sheet and cash flow reporting, supported by clear commentary and actionable financial insight.
  • Client Billing & Revenue: Manage invoicing across fixed monthly management fees, sales management fees, staging fees and percentage-based procurement fees. Maintain accurate fee records, verify procurement values, monitor revenue recognition and oversee receivables and collections.
  • Cash, Banking & Payments: Monitor daily cash positions, maintain rolling short-term cash forecasts, manage payment runs and banking arrangements, and ensure payments are properly documented, authorised and controlled.
  • Client Costs & Recharges: Oversee project-level cost coding, client disbursements and recharges, ensuring recoverable costs are accurately allocated and engagement-level profitability is clearly understood.
  • Budgeting & Financial Planning: Lead annual budgeting and periodic reforecasting, maintain the multi-year financial model and provide financial analysis to support engagement pricing, business planning and investment decisions.
  • Payroll & Benefits: Oversee payroll through an external provider, ensuring accurate and timely processing, and administer the financial aspects of employee benefits.
  • Tax & Multi-State Compliance: Coordinate federal, New York State and New York City tax filings with external accountants, and maintain the financial and entity compliance calendar, including relevant registration and annual reporting requirements in Colorado and Florida.
  • Systems & Governance: Select and implement accounting, billing and expense management systems; document finance policies and procedures; establish approval limits and internal controls; and ensure consistent financial record-keeping across the business.
  • Executive Partnership: Work closely with the CEO, providing reliable financial information, highlighting risks and opportunities, and translating the numbers into clear recommendations for commercial decisions.

The Ideal Candidate

You are an experienced, self-directed finance professional who combines strong technical accounting capability with commercial awareness and the confidence to establish effective processes in a small, fast-moving business.

You are comfortable taking complete ownership of the finance function, working independently while collaborating with external accountants and advisers, and ensuring that financial information is accurate, timely and meaningful. You understand the importance of robust controls without losing sight of the practical needs of a growing business.

Exceptional discretion, integrity, attention to detail and a proactive, solutions-focused approach are essential. You will also be comfortable setting clear expectations for colleagues regarding expense documentation, receipts and the financial information required to maintain effective controls.

Essential Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline, or an equivalent professional qualification.
  • At least seven years of progressive accounting experience, including two or more years in a Financial Controller, Finance Manager or equivalent finance leadership role.
  • Proven ability to manage the month-end close and prepare management accounts independently.
  • Working knowledge of US payroll and the coordination of federal, state and city tax filings, including multi-state compliance.
  • Strong Excel skills and financial modelling capabilities.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks or a comparable accounting system.
  • Sound understanding of internal financial controls, payment authorisations and financial governance, with the confidence to establish and maintain effective processes.
  • Exceptional discretion and the ability to handle sensitive company and client financial information.
  • Authorisation to work in the United States.

Desirable Experience

  • CPA or CMA qualification.
  • Experience in professional services, real estate, construction, architecture or interior design.
  • Project cost accounting, client recharges, disbursement accounting and engagement-level profitability analysis.
  • Experience establishing a finance function, selecting systems or implementing financial controls in a start-up or owner-managed business.
  • Experience with multi-state entity registration and compliance, particularly across New York, Colorado and Florida.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $145,000–$165,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications, paid weekly.
  • Annual bonus: Discretionary, reviewed annually, with a guideline range of 0%–20% of base salary.
  • Paid vacation: 20 days annually, plus 10 paid national holidays.
  • Health insurance: Group health plan, with a company contribution of up to $750 per month.
  • Paid sick and safe leave: 40 hours per calendar year.
  • Working hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 am–6:00 pm, with reasonable flexibility around month-end close and filing deadlines.
  • Location: Midtown East, New York, NY.
