A Jewish community and educational center serving college students at the University of Michigan is seeking a hands-on, dependable Housekeeper/Facilities Manager to maintain the cleanliness, organization, and readiness of its building and guest accommodations.

This role combines direct, hands-on housekeeping with facility upkeep, inventory management, errands, and event support. The person hired will personally handle cleaning, laundry, room preparation, and other daily tasks while ensuring the facility is well maintained and ready for students, guests, and programming.

Experience in housekeeping, janitorial work, hotels, private households, restaurants, facilities, or similar service environments could be an excellent fit. A traditional building management background is not required; reliability, initiative, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic are essential.

Schedule – Please Read Carefully

The candidate must have open availability seven days per week during the academic year. Hours fluctuate based on programming. Some weeks will be extremely busy and may require work across all seven days, while others will be significantly quieter.

Friday evenings and Saturdays are regular and important working days. Shabbat begins Friday evening and continues through Saturday. The center hosts a Friday night dinner for approximately 600 people, along with Saturday lunch and programming, making these some of the busiest days of the week.

The position follows the university academic calendar. During academic breaks, including the extended summer break of approximately June through August, there is little to no regular work required. Salary continues throughout these breaks.

Responsibilities

  • Personally perform routine housekeeping and deep cleaning throughout the building and guest apartments, including bathrooms, kitchens, common areas, and event spaces.
  • Keep floors, surfaces, furnishings, and frequently used spaces clean, sanitary, and presentable.
  • Prepare guest accommodations, change beds, wash linens and towels, and restock rooms between stays.
  • Maintain an organized cleaning schedule to ensure routine tasks and periodic deep cleaning are completed.
  • Prepare and reset spaces before and after large weekly meals, events, and educational programming.
  • Handle event setup and breakdown, including moving and stacking chairs, arranging spaces, and cleaning up afterward.
  • Collect and remove trash and recycling, particularly following meals and events.
  • Manage inventory and restock paper goods, beverages, groceries, linens, cleaning products, and other facility necessities.
  • Complete grocery shopping, supply runs, and other errands.
  • Receive deliveries and organize supplies and storage areas.
  • Address light maintenance needs within personal capabilities and report repair or service needs promptly.
  • Monitor the building’s overall condition and proactively identify cleaning, organization, and upkeep needs.

Ideal Candidate

  • Has experience performing thorough housekeeping, cleaning, and general upkeep in a busy household, hotel, community facility, or similar setting.
  • Takes pride in maintaining clean, organized, welcoming spaces.
  • Is dependable, proactive, and able to work independently without constant direction.
  • Can balance daily cleaning responsibilities with changing event and facility needs.
  • Is comfortable with the physical duties of the role, including carrying trash, moving chairs, handling laundry and supplies, and assisting with setup and cleanup.
  • Has significant schedule flexibility, including regular Friday evening and Saturday availability.
  • Is comfortable respectfully supporting the center’s Jewish traditions, community, and programming. Previous experience within a Jewish organization is not required.

This position is well suited to someone who enjoys hands-on housekeeping and facility care, thrives in a busy community environment, and appreciates substantial paid downtime during university breaks and summer months.
