Household Assistant / Companion Opportunity in Portland, OR & Tucson, AZ

• Position: Household Assistant / Companion
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 1pm–7pm (30 hours per week); Possibility for full-time hours 
• Salary: $36–$40+ per hour, depending on experience; flexibility DOE
• Start Date: ASAP
• Location: Portland, OR during the summer and Tucson, AZ during the winter around October-May
• Housing: Temporary housing may be provided for the candidate during seasonal stays away from their home location

About the Family

A warm, social, and engaging couple in their 80s is seeking a personable and reliable Household Assistant to help with everyday tasks and make daily life a little easier. They are independent, mentally sharp, and enjoy cooking and spending time with others, but some household responsibilities and errands have become more challenging to manage.

The family splits their time between Portland, Oregon, during the summer and Tucson, Arizona, during the winter. They are hoping to find one consistent person who can accompany them between both locations, providing continuity and support throughout the year.

The ideal candidate will enjoy building a genuine relationship with the couple while helping with household organization, errands, scheduling, and general day-to-day needs. This is a great opportunity for someone who is personable, proactive, and enjoys supporting older adults while respecting their independence.

Responsibilities

The Household Assistant will help with a variety of everyday household and personal support tasks, including but not limited to:

• Managing appointments and keeping the family’s Google Calendar organized and up to date
• Making restaurant reservations and assisting with scheduling
• Providing kitchen support, including cleaning up after meals and loading and unloading the dishwasher
• Assisting the couple while they cook, as needed
• Handling laundry and general household tidying
• Organizing weekly medications in pill organizers according to the family’s established instructions
• Grocery shopping and picking up prescriptions, dry cleaning, and other necessities
• Helping operate the television and other household technology
• Driving the couple to appointments or outings as needed
• Providing companionship and helping with daily tasks to keep the household running smoothly
• Traveling between Portland and Tucson with the family throughout the year

Deep cleaning is not usually a primary responsibility, as the family already employs a housekeeper, but someone comfortable with cleaning tasks like cleaning up the kitchen after making dinner, etc. 

Ideal Candidate & Personality

The family is looking for someone warm, outgoing, and personable who genuinely enjoys conversation and getting to know the people they work with. They are social and love connecting with others, so a candidate who enjoys building a friendly, trusting relationship with them would be an excellent fit.

The ideal candidate will be organized, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable following directions. It is especially important that they communicate well, ask questions when clarification is needed, and make sure tasks are completed according to the family’s preferences.

Experience as a household manager, personal assistant, companion, or household assistant would be ideal. The family is looking for someone who can offer practical support while respecting their independence and helping them remain comfortable in their home.

Requirements

• Availability for around 30 hours per week, Monday–Friday, ideally 1pm–7pm, somewhat flexible but dinner time help is definitely needed.
• Previous experience in household management, personal assistance, companion care, or a similar support role
• Excellent organizational, communication, and follow-through skills
• Warm, friendly personality and enjoyment of conversation
• Ability to follow directions and ask clarifying questions
• Valid driver’s license and comfort driving the family’s vehicles
• Willingness to travel seasonally between Portland, OR and Tucson, AZ
• Ability to work independently and provide consistent, reliable support

Compensation & Benefits: $36–$40 per hour, with flexibility for an exceptional candidate. Benefits include two weeks of paid time off, 3–5 sick days, and paid major holidays. Temporary housing may be arranged and paid for during seasonal stays away from the candidate’s home location.
